It is hard to describe what the experience of travelling to far away lands can have on us, the culture, the architecture, and the people we meet all leave a lasting memory and impact on our lives beyond that adventure. It was my role as part of this special commission to capture essences of my clients travels as well as they home in the stunning Yorkshire Dales in a bespoke display and media unit.
The brief was to keep the unit unsymmetrical and incorporate integrated lighting in randomly chosen compartments to help showcase sentimental ornaments that have been collected by my clients on their explorations.
Inspired by my client’s time in China I have included different bespoke detailing in the Raydale display unit; such as the flicks at the ends of the shelves created using a bespoke convex plane, the abstract carved cupboard doors, the push to open doors and the non symmetrical storage compartments. At its centre is the latex fan made from solid maple, for me, this reflects the sunset. I couldn’t resist when designing adding the beams of light that grace the Yorkshire Dales on a beautiful evening.
This striking piece is made from oak veneered boards, solid oak and maple and has some super slim integrated spot lights that give off a lovely warm light.
The sheer scale of this piece introduced a new complexity in the making process but my small workshop wouldn’t be beaten and I couldn’t be happier with what has been achieved.
